A dash cam has exactly one job: produce footage clear enough to identify a number plate at the moment something goes wrong. Most of the specifications on the box have surprisingly little to do with that.
Resolution is not the whole story
4K sounds decisively better than 1080p, and in good daylight it often is — more pixels across a number plate at distance. But three other factors matter at least as much.
Sensor quality. A large, modern sensor gathers more light per pixel. A cheap 4K camera with a small sensor produces a noisier, less usable image at night than a good 1080p camera with a large one.
Bitrate. This is how much data per second the camera writes. Heavy compression at a low bitrate smears exactly the fine detail you need — characters on a plate, at speed, at night. A 4K camera at a low bitrate can be worse than 1440p at a high one.
Lens aperture. A wider maximum aperture lets in more light. Look for f/1.8 or wider if night footage matters.
1440p from a good sensor at a healthy bitrate is a better everyday choice than 4K from a budget one. If you can only check one number, check the sensor.
Field of view
A wider lens sees more lanes but pushes objects further away and adds distortion at the edges — which is where number plates become unreadable. Somewhere between 140 and 160 degrees is the usual sweet spot. Beyond that you are trading identification for coverage.
Night performance
Most incidents that need footage happen in poor light. Look for:
- A named, current sensor rather than an unspecified one.
- HDR or WDR, which balances headlight glare against dark surroundings.
- Sample footage recorded at night, not a daylight showreel.
Ignore “night vision” as a marketing phrase. Dash cams do not have infrared illumination pointing forward; they simply expose better or worse.
Parking mode, and the power problem
Parking mode records while the car is off — the feature most owners eventually want, and the one that needs planning.
There are three approaches:
- Motion or impact detection with hardwiring. The camera draws power from the fuse box through a kit with low-voltage cut-off, which stops drawing current before the battery is too flat to start the car. The cut-off is not optional.
- Battery pack. A separate cell charges while driving and powers the camera when parked. Kinder to the car battery, more expensive, more to install.
- Buffered recording. The camera keeps a rolling buffer so an impact clip includes the seconds before the impact, not just after.
Bear in mind that an electric or hybrid car has its own rules about accessory power when parked; check the manufacturer guidance before hardwiring anything.
Heat: the reason dash cams die
A windscreen in summer is one of the hottest places in a car, and heat is the main killer of these devices.
- Supercapacitors tolerate heat far better than lithium batteries and are strongly preferred for a camera that lives on the glass all year.
- A camera with an internal lithium cell is cheaper and will have a shorter life in a hot climate.
Storage
Dash cams write continuously, which is brutal on flash memory. Use a high-endurance microSD card designed for surveillance recording; ordinary cards fail within months and often fail silently.
Check the maximum supported capacity, format the card in the camera every month or two, and periodically confirm the camera is actually recording. A dash cam that has been silently failing since spring is worse than none, because you believed you had footage.
Front only, or front and rear?
Rear cameras are genuinely useful — a large share of claims involve being hit from behind. A two-channel system costs more and adds a cable run along the headlining, but it covers the situation where the other driver’s account differs most from yours.
Interior-facing cameras matter mainly for taxi and rideshare work, and they raise privacy obligations toward passengers.
Legal considerations in Europe
Rules differ significantly by country, and they change. In broad terms:
- Some countries restrict or prohibit continuous recording in public.
- Data protection law generally applies once footage captures identifiable people, especially if it is published.
- Windscreen placement must not obstruct the driver’s view, and some countries specify permitted areas.
- Rules for uploading footage to social media are stricter than rules for keeping it privately.
Check the current requirements for the countries you drive in, particularly before a road trip across borders. Treat this as a prompt to verify, not as legal advice.
A practical shortlist
- Named current sensor, aperture f/1.8 or wider.
- 1440p or 4K with a high stated bitrate.
- Field of view around 140 to 160 degrees.
- Supercapacitor rather than internal battery.
- Parking mode with a low-voltage cut-off hardwire kit.
- High-endurance microSD card, bought at the same time.
- A discreet body that does not block your view.
