The European Union’s common charger directive has done something unusual for regulation: it changed what is in people’s pockets faster than the market would have on its own.
What the rules actually require
Directive (EU) 2022/2380 requires a USB-C charging port on a defined list of portable devices sold in the EU — mobile phones, tablets, digital cameras, headphones, portable speakers, handheld game consoles, e-readers, keyboards, mice and portable navigation devices — from 28 December 2024. Laptops were given a longer runway, with the requirement applying from 28 April 2026.
The directive also standardises fast-charging behaviour around USB Power Delivery for devices that support fast charging, and requires clearer labelling of the power a device needs. Manufacturers must also allow devices to be sold without a charger.
Why this matters inside a car
Cars change slowly. Accessory sockets, head units and built-in USB ports live for a decade or more, so a vehicle bought a few years ago may still have USB-A ports delivering a few watts, while every device the owner carries now expects USB-C and Power Delivery.
The practical consequences for drivers:
- Multi-port chargers make more sense than they used to. One USB-C source can now serve a phone, a tablet, headphones and — from this year — increasingly laptops.
- Cable quality became the limiting factor. A USB-C cable rated below the power the device requests will silently cap charging, and nothing on screen explains why. Cables above 60W need an internal e-marker chip.
- Built-in car USB ports are the weak link. Many are data-focused USB-A ports with low power output. A separate charger in the accessory socket is often several times faster than the port in the console.
If your car has USB-A ports and your devices all use USB-C, the port in the car is almost certainly the slowest way to charge in the vehicle.
What to check when buying accessories now
- USB-C in and out. Devices that still ship with USB-A input are heading for a shrinking cable ecosystem.
- A stated Power Delivery profile, not just a wattage on the box.
- PPS support if your phone benefits from it — it charges cooler.
- Honest per-port power splits on multi-port chargers.
- Correctly rated cables bought at the same time as the charger.
What has not changed
The directive governs devices sold in the EU. It does not retrofit anything in an existing car, it does not change what a 12V accessory socket can supply, and it does not stop manufacturers from shipping poor cables. The physical connector is standard now; the electrical behaviour behind it still varies enormously.
For anyone buying car accessories, that is the useful takeaway: the plug shape argument is settled, and the specification that still deserves attention is what the charger and cable can actually negotiate.
