Every car sold in the EU since 2001 for petrol, and 2004 for diesel, has a standardised OBD2 socket under the dashboard. That standard is the reason a cheap adapter works on almost any car — and also the reason it shows you far less than the garage sees.
What the standard actually covers
OBD2 was mandated for emissions-related diagnostics. That is the whole scope. A compliant scanner can read:
- Emissions fault codes from the engine control unit, the ones that turn on the check engine light.
- Live sensor data such as coolant temperature, engine speed, fuel trims and oxygen sensor readings.
- Readiness monitors, which tell you whether the car has completed its self-tests.
- The freeze frame — a snapshot of conditions when the fault was stored.
That is genuinely useful and covers the single most common question: why is the engine light on.
What it does not cover
Everything outside the engine and emissions is manufacturer-specific. ABS, airbags, transmission, power steering, climate control, body electronics, battery management on modern cars — none of these are part of the OBD2 standard.
This is why a generic scanner reports “no faults” on a car with an airbag warning light illuminated. It is not broken; it is looking at a different system.
If you want ABS and airbag codes, you need a tool with manufacturer-specific coverage for your brand, and you should verify your exact model and year is on its supported list before buying.
The clone problem
The most common cheap adapter is a Bluetooth or Wi-Fi dongle based on the ELM327 chip. Genuine ELM327 chips are made by one company. The overwhelming majority of dongles sold for a few euros contain a cheap microcontroller with copied, incomplete firmware.
Symptoms of a bad clone, all of which are common:
- Connects, then drops out repeatedly.
- Reads some protocols and not others, so it works on one car and not another.
- Reports a firmware version like “v2.1” that never existed.
- Leaves the car’s bus awake, quietly draining the battery if left plugged in.
That last one is the real hazard. A dongle left in the socket on a car that is used infrequently can flatten the battery in days. Unplug it when you are not using it, whatever the seller claims.
Buying from a recognised brand rather than the cheapest listing solves most of this for a modest amount more.
Dongle plus phone, or a standalone tool
Dongle plus app is flexible and cheap. The app does the work, so quality varies enormously between apps on the same hardware. Good apps display live data well, log journeys and explain codes. Subscription models are common.
Standalone handheld tools need no phone, no pairing and no subscription, boot instantly, and are what you want in a cold car park. They are less flexible and age less gracefully.
For occasional use on one car, a decent dongle and a good app is the sensible choice. If you maintain several cars, or you dislike fighting Bluetooth pairing in the rain, a handheld earns its price.
Reading a code without over-reacting
A fault code names a circuit or a symptom, not a broken part. A code reading “oxygen sensor circuit slow response” does not mean the oxygen sensor is faulty; it means the signal from that circuit is out of expectation, which could be the sensor, the wiring, an exhaust leak upstream, or a fuelling problem the sensor is correctly reporting.
The pattern that leads people to replace parts unnecessarily is treating the code as a diagnosis. The code is where diagnosis starts.
Practical checks before you buy
- Confirm your car is OBD2 — pre-2001 petrol and pre-2004 diesel cars often are not, whatever the socket looks like.
- Check the brand coverage list if you want more than engine codes.
- Prefer a named brand over the cheapest dongle.
- Check the app as carefully as the hardware, and whether it charges a subscription.
- Plan to unplug it between uses.
What it is genuinely good for
Knowing, before you book the car in, whether the warning light is a loose fuel cap or something that should stop you driving. That single piece of information is worth the price of the tool several times over.
