Factory car audio is built to a price, and the compromises are consistent enough that the fixes are predictable. The mistake most people make is spending on the wrong one first.
The wattage number is theatre
A head unit advertised as “4 × 50W” is quoting peak power — an instantaneous figure measured under conditions nothing resembles. The number that matters is RMS, the continuous power it can actually deliver, and for a factory head unit that is typically 15 to 22 watts per channel.
Speakers are sold the same way. A speaker rated “300W peak” may have an RMS rating of 45W. Matching a 300W speaker to a 50W head unit is not a mismatch to worry about; matching *RMS to RMS* is the only comparison that means anything.
Rule of thumb: if a listing quotes only peak watts and never RMS, the manufacturer is not confident about the number that counts.
Under-powering speakers is also the more common cause of blown drivers, not over-powering. A small amplifier driven into clipping sends a distorted, near-square signal that cooks tweeters. The distortion you hear at high volume is the warning.
Fix one: the doors, not the speakers
This is the unglamorous answer, and it is usually the right one.
A car door is a thin steel box with holes in it. The speaker fires forwards into the cabin and backwards into that cavity, where the rear wave bounces around, leaks through the holes, and cancels part of the front wave. The result is the classic car-audio failure: no bass, a boomy resonance at one frequency, and rattles.
Sound deadening — mass-loaded butyl matting on the outer door skin, and sealing the inner skin’s access holes — changes this more than a speaker swap does. It stops panel resonance, seals the enclosure, and lets the speaker you already own produce the bass it was always capable of.
It is fiddly work, it takes an afternoon per door, and it costs less than a mid-range speaker set.
Fix two: speakers, chosen sensibly
If you do replace them, buy for sensitivity, not power handling. Sensitivity, quoted in dB at 1W/1m, tells you how loud a speaker plays with the small amount of power a factory head unit actually provides. A speaker at 91 dB will sound substantially louder and cleaner on a factory unit than one at 86 dB, whatever the power ratings say.
- Coaxial speakers put the tweeter in the middle of the woofer. Simple, cheap, and fine.
- Component sets separate the tweeter so it can be mounted higher, closer to ear level. Better imaging, more installation work.
Check the fitting size and mounting depth for your specific car before buying anything. A speaker that does not physically fit is the most common return in this category.
Fix three: turn off the processing
Many factory head units apply aggressive equalisation and “loudness” curves to flatter cheap speakers. Once the doors are sealed and the speakers are decent, that processing is now working against you.
Set the equaliser flat, disable any bass-boost or surround mode, and listen again before changing anything else. It costs nothing and it is often the largest single improvement.
What to do in what order
- Set the EQ flat and turn off enhancement modes. Free.
- Deaden and seal the front doors. Cheap, laborious, biggest real gain.
- Replace the front speakers, choosing for sensitivity and correct fitment.
- Add a small amplifier only if you now want more volume — with sealed doors and sensitive speakers, many people find they do not.
- A subwoofer last, and only if you genuinely miss the bottom octave.
What will not fix it
A better Bluetooth codec, a more expensive AUX cable, a “high-resolution” streaming subscription, or a gold-plated connector. The weak link in a car is the acoustic environment and the transducers in it, and the signal path reaches those long before anything else matters.
