Most of what goes wrong when fitting accessories happens in a handful of predictable ways. None of them require special skill to avoid, only knowing they exist.
Adhesive and the dashboard
Textured soft-touch dashboards are the surface most often ruined. The coating is a thin polyurethane layer that adhesive pads bond to more strongly than the layer bonds to the plastic beneath. Removing the mount takes the finish with it.
- Prefer vent, CD-slot or windscreen mounting over adhesive on soft-touch plastic.
- If you must use adhesive, test on a hidden area and use a mount with a removable adhesive pad designed for automotive interiors.
- Clean with isopropyl alcohol only. Interior dressings leave a film that prevents bonding, which is why so many pads fall off in week two.
- Remove old adhesive with heat and patience, never a blade.
Windscreens are not uniform
Before sticking anything to the glass, look for:
- Heating elements — fine wires or a printed layer, often at the base for the wiper park area.
- Rain and light sensors behind the mirror, which need a clear field.
- Camera and radar apertures for driver assistance systems. Blocking one causes faults and can disable safety functions.
- Legal restrictions on what may be attached to the windscreen and where, which vary by country.
Also check whether the glass is acoustic or infrared-reflective, because that layer weakens radio and GPS reception for anything mounted behind it.
Cables and airbags
This is the mistake with the worst consequences. The A-pillar trim, the roof lining edge and the seat sides contain curtain and side airbags.
- Route cables along the edge of the pillar trim and into the door seal rubber, never across the airbag.
- Never remove an airbag cover or unclip trim that is holding one.
- Keep cables clear of the pedals and the steering column, secured so they cannot migrate.
- Use a plastic trim tool, not a screwdriver. Clips are cheap; scratched trim is not.
If a cable route requires removing a pillar trim on a car you do not know, that is a reasonable point to hand it to someone who does.
Fuse taps and hardwiring
Add-a-circuit fuse taps are the standard way to power a hardwired accessory, and there are three ways to get them wrong.
- Choosing the wrong circuit. Never tap anything safety-related — airbags, ABS, lighting. Pick a low-current convenience circuit, and use a circuit tester to confirm whether it is permanently live or ignition-switched, depending on what you need.
- Orientation. Fuse taps are directional. Fitted the wrong way round, the original circuit is protected by your accessory’s fuse rather than its own.
- Fuse rating. The accessory gets its own correctly rated fuse. Never increase the original fuse to make something work — the fuse protects the wiring, and the wiring cannot be upgraded from the fuse box.
Earth to a factory earth point with clean bare metal, not to a random bracket.
Parking mode and battery drain
Anything powered when the car is off will eventually flatten the battery. A hardwire kit for a dash cam must include a low-voltage cut-off that disconnects before the battery is too flat to start.
On hybrid and electric cars, check the manufacturer’s guidance first — the 12V system behaves differently when parked, and some warranties set conditions on accessory wiring.
Before you start
- Take photographs as you remove trim. Reassembly is much easier with them.
- Keep screws in labelled containers; they are rarely the same length.
- Work in daylight, not at the end of an evening.
- Test the accessory fully before clipping all the trim back.
- Know how to reverse everything you have done.
When to stop
Airbag areas, anything behind the instrument cluster, anything requiring the battery to be disconnected on a car with coded electronics, and any circuit you cannot positively identify. The cost of a professional fitting is almost always lower than the cost of the alternative.
